A non-profit organization for women and girls who have experienced early mother loss through death Our MissionMotherless Daughters of Orange County (MDOC) was formed to provide support, community, and resources to women and girls who have experienced early mother loss (birth to 21 years of age) through death. We are committed to bringing together motherless daughters, otherwise isolated, to encourage healing among them and to promote awareness about the long-lasting effects of such a loss. We operate in Orange County, California only.
ProfileIn 1994, Hope Edelman authored the book, Motherless Daughters: Legacy of Loss, a book about premature mother loss. The national response from women who had lost their mothers as children or adolescents was so enormous that a non-profit organization in New York was formed. Local groups started forming in 1995, and continue to thrive even though the national organization is no longer operational. Each year, approximately 60,000 girls under the age of eighteen lose their mothers. In 1997, the first Motherless Daughters Day Luncheon was held in Orange County. Women have found comfort and healing in meeting and sharing their stories with other women.
